Self-Esteem From a Christian Perspective
Self-esteem from a Christian perspective is an important topic because
Christianity fills you with self-respect and such other emotions. Perhaps
every religion and belief has its own rules and convictions regarding the
life as a whole. After a close reading of the Bible, many parents have come
to realize that God commands the parents to raise and teach a child themselves;
Christian homeschooling rather then sending children away o outside teachers.
Within the Christian community there has been a history of ambivalence about
the appropriateness of feeling good about one's self. Various hymns have
emphasized the misery of man and even the subhuman (less than human) quality
of man. Countless sermons have been delivered urging the renunciation or
destruction of self as a pre-requisite for God's approval and blessing.
The best Christian homeschooling is the only one that can handle this issue
(and, who can be a better mentor than your parents, who actually created
you). This responsibility includes spiritual training and imparting of wisdom–both
of which are very difficult to do with children who are being taught opposite
values by government curriculum. If you choose to take on the role as your
child’s teacher, you must consider your view on self-esteem from a
Christian perspective.
The foundation of self-esteem from a Christian perspective is a very
deep concept (possibly can take hundreds of pages to define and analyze).
However, the biblical roots of positive self-regard and self-esteem may
be traced initially to the creation account. In contrast to a view of
man's origins which regards man as a chance mutation or impersonally
evolved, the Genesis account suggests that from the beginning man was
both very special and highly regarded. God created man in His own image,
gave him major responsibility, provided abundantly for his needs, and
considered His creation very good . Referring to God's creation after
the fall, the psalmist speaks with awe about both the Lord God and His
creation. "What is man that thou are mindful of him, and the son
of man that thou dost care for him? Yet thou has made him a little less
than God, and dost crown him with glory and honor." if we see carefully,
the tense used with reference to God's evaluation implies a present,
continuing act at the current time, not just a thing of the past. Even
after the fall God continues to evaluate positively, or "crown man
with glory and honor". That’s the essence of self-esteem from
a Christian perspective and should be the basis for Christian homeschooling.
Recently there has been a growing dissatisfaction and that calls for
reanalysis of biblical perspectives on the meanings of self, self-centeredness
and self-esteem from a Christian perspective. When we examined the cause
of growing dissatisfaction we found that modern educational methods continue
to produce high school graduates who are not only functionally illiterate
and lacking in critical thinking skills, but morally bankrupt as well.
So educators are returning to classical education and Christian homeschooling.
A religious education returns to the time-honored educational theory
of the past. The classical method was the only educational theory in
practice in Western Civilization for over two millennia.
When we talk about self-esteem from a Christian perspective, everywhere
in the secular media we’ve been hearing and reading about the critical
problem of poor self-esteem among our younger generation. A bad self-image
is being cited as the cause of teen suicide, drug abuse, crime and violence.
Educators and community leaders are trying to find ways to help children
boost their self-esteem. Self-esteem is a confidence and satisfaction
in oneself and if we want to get it back in our youth then we have to
promote religious education. Finally, on a practical level, using Christian
homeschooling, we can concentrate on helping our children acquire new
skills or improve old ones. Through the process of competency acquisition
confidence will increase, new efforts that will in turn bring reinforcement
will be tried, and self esteem will be elevated.
