Teaching Self-Control through Problem Solving Skills and Behavior
Management
Self-control is the ability to make choices about how one behaves and acts
rather than relying on impulses. Each and every parent wants his or her
child to make thoughtful decisions on the way to behave. In order to develop
self-control in your child you need to take the following steps. You first
need to identify in what areas of his/her life he/she needs to gain more
self-discipline. Teaching problem solving skills that pertain to these specific
areas, should encourage your child to slow down and consider the outcomes
before they act. Problem solving skills should be modeled as well as taught
to be most effective.
You have to work hard with your child. By exercising self-control, your
child can learn to make appropriate decisions and choose behaviors
that will be more likely to have positive outcomes. As your kid grows
and can begin to understand the connection between actions and consequences,
make sure you begin to establish the rules of your family's home. It's
significant to give details to kids on you expect of them before you
penalize them for a certain behavior. These general basics to behavior
management and problem solving skills should start you off on a path
to teaching your child to be a good and thoughtful individual.
