Homeschooling using childrens magazines
There are endless possibilities of using childrens magazines in your curriculum
as teaching opportunities. Obviously, the use of childrens magazines to
encourage children to read for enjoyment is the most common use of a magazine
within a teaching environment, since magazines are available on such a wide
range of subject matters, but there are other creative uses, also. For example,
take animal magazines for kids, and read one of the articles that discuss
having a particular animal as a pet, to your child. Have your child write
a list of arguments for and against having that animal as a pet in your
home. Animal magazines for kids are created for children of all age groups,
so be sure to pick one that is appropriate for your child’s reading
level and age.
You can also use childrens magazines to help children learn how to
make inferences. Read the titles and subheadings of the articles, and
have your child predict what the article will be about based on that
limited information. If your child has a strong interest in animals,
using animal magazines for kids will help maintain their attention and
interest in the activities you do using the magazines.
“Ranger Rick” and “Animal Fair” are childrens
magazines geared toward the preteen group, ages 7 to 12, and feature
informative articles with colorful photos and interesting animal related
articles. “Animal Fair” is one of the only animal magazines
for kids that features articles about popular celebrities and their pets,
a topic that should interest the most reluctant of readers!
