Using Behavior Charts as a Behavior Management Technique
Using behavior charts to correct unacceptable behaviors exhibited by your
children is a positive way to enforce appropriate behaviors. Behavior management
is often not considered until your child has reached school age, since a
typical two year old child will “test the waters”, by biting,
screaming, throwing tantrums, and otherwise being disobedient. As the child
gets older, however, and exhibits these same behaviors outside the home,
in school or in other public places, the problem then effects the child’s
teachers, classmates, and others- not to mention inhibits the ability for
the child to learn. Behavior charts and other similar tools will encourage
your child to react appropriately to situations, and is a highly effective
behavior management tool, as well as being part of your homeschooling materials.
You can be creative and invent your own behavior charts, based on your
child’s personality. Once you’ve determined the behaviors
that you want to replace with appropriate ones, you can create a chart
using characters and stickers that will interest your child. Your chart
should reinforce the behavior that you WANT to happen, placing a sticker
on the chart and explaining to your child that the stickers show that
the reaction to a situation was handled with behavior that was acceptable.
If you’re not as creative, or have time limitations, you can purchase
charts designed to create a behavior management system from many homeschooling
materials providers, as well as educational web sites and stores.
